Serve and Protect

TOWN Magazine

The June 2011 edition of TOWN Magazine includes an Editor’s Letter from Jack Bacot entitled “Serve and Protect.”

In this letter, Bacot talks about the beautiful Upstate landscape known as the “Blue Wall,” formerly known as the Southern Blue Ridge Escarpment. He praises the efforts that have gone into ensuring that more than 400,000 acres of this Blue Ridge terrain have been preserved as conservation land, including areas such as Devils Fork, Wildcat Wayside, Table Rock, Buzzards Roost, and Bald Rock.

Bacot specifically highlights the work of Tommy Wyche through Naturaland Trust to “…designate the Mountain Bridge Wilderness area and pave the way to protect 40,000 acres between Table Rock and Caesar’s Head – forming a bridge between protected lands that spans three counties and 70 miles in the Upstate.”

Bacot also talks about the SC Heritage Trust Act that Tommy Wyche drafted, the first legal entity of its kind in the country, which was designated to permanently protect lands with outstanding natural or cultural value. Of Tommy Wyche, Bacot says, “He truly is a steward of the land.”

Bacot goes on to remind readers that there is more work to be done, specifically in the Upstate’s Jones Gap community. The Nature Conservancy is making an important push to purchase the remaining 85 acres of land that straddle the Jones Gap area of the Blue Wall. He urges readers to help “… finish the work that Tommy Wyche started 38 years ago.”

Another article featured later in the June edition of TOWN Magazine called “Mind the Gap” included photography by Tommy Wyche and provided more details about the Nature Conservancy’s fundraising campaign.
